About Us: RBYS -

Rebuild Your Self

Our Story: From Pain to Purpose

RBYS was born from a journey of distance, insight, and deep-rooted love. I am Mama Dampha, founder of RBYS, a daughter of The Gambia who grew up in Serekunda and now lives in Sweden. From thousands of miles away, I watched my country struggle with the silent epidemics of trauma, shame, and economic hardship—particularly among women and children. I witnessed the resilience of my people, but also the heavy burden they carry alone.

In Sweden, I experienced how therapy and open conversations about mental health could transform lives. Yet I knew this resource was largely unavailable back home, where stigma and limited resources prevent healing. This realization became a calling: to bridge the gap between the support I found in the diaspora and the urgent need in my homeland.

RBYS is not just an organization—it is my promise to The Gambia. A promise to create a safe space where no one has to suffer in silence, where shame is replaced with strength, and where healing is linked to tangible hope.

Our Name: The Power of "Rebuild Your Self"

We chose "Rebuild Your Self" (RBYS) intentionally. Rebuilding implies that something strong already exists within you—a core self that may have been damaged by trauma, poverty, or circumstance. Our role is not to fix you, but to help you rediscover and reconstruct your inherent strength, dignity, and potential.

Our Vision

A Gambia where every person—especially every woman and child—has the psychological, emotional, and economic tools to become the best version of themselves, free from shame and empowered to build a self-reliant future.

Our Mission

To provide a safe, confidential, and holistic environment for Gambians to heal from trauma, overcome hardship, and unlock their potential through culturally-sensitive counseling, life coaching, and skills empowerment.

Our Core Values

1. Dignity First

We believe every person deserves to be treated with unconditional respect and worth, regardless of their past or present circumstances.

2. Cultural Integrity

Our approach is grounded in Gambian values and realities. We blend global best practices with deep local understanding.

3. Confidentiality as a Sacred Trust

What is shared in our space stays in our space. We create a judgment-free zone where secrets are safe and shame is dissolved.

4. Holistic Healing

We address the whole person—mind, heart, and livelihood—because true recovery requires both inner peace and outer opportunity.

5. Empowerment, Not Dependency

We equip people with tools and confidence, so they become the architects of their own futures.

Make A Difference

Why We Focus on Women & Children

Women and children often bear the heaviest burdens in times of hardship, yet have the fewest avenues for support. They are also the bedrock of our communities. When a woman heals and grows, her family heals and grows. When a child is given hope, an entire generation is strengthened. By prioritizing their well-being, we invest in the very foundation of Gambian society.

Our Unique Approach: The Three Pillars of RBYS
Healing the Heart

• Confidential one-on-one counseling

• Trauma-informed support groups

• Safe space for sharing without judgment

• Life coaching for personal growth

Empowering the Hands

• Practical skills training (tailoring, agro-processing, IT)

• Micro-enterprise startup support

• Financial literacy training

• Seed funding for small businesses

Strengthening the Community

• Community awareness campaigns to break mental health stigma

• School outreach programs

• Advocacy for policy change

• Building networks of support

Meet Our Founder: Mama Dampha

"I am both Gambian and a global citizen. I carry the warmth of Banjul in my heart and the lessons of the diaspora in my vision. My life has been a bridge between worlds, and now I am using that bridge to bring healing home."

Born in The Gambia and raised in Serekunda, I now live in Sweden, where I have experienced firsthand the transformative power of mental health support. My dual perspective—deeply rooted in Gambian culture and informed by international best practices—uniquely positions me to lead RBYS. I am not an outsider coming to help; I am a daughter returning home with tools, resources, and unwavering commitment.

Our Gambian Heart, Global Standards

While RBYS is proudly and authentically Gambian, we adhere to international standards of care in counseling and program management. We are committed to:

  • Training our counselors in proven, evidence-based therapeutic approaches
  • Maintaining strict ethical guidelines and confidentiality protocols
  • Implementing robust monitoring and evaluation to ensure real impact
  • Partnering with both local and international experts to continuously improve our services

Our Testimonials

What they are talking about RBYS.

"After my husband died, I thought my life was over. The counseling at RBYS helped me grieve, and the tailoring training gave me a way to support my children. Today I have my own small shop." — Aminata, 34, Bakau

I returned from the Backway journey broken in spirit. The men's support group at RBYS was the first place I felt understood. Now I'm training in solar installation and have hope again." — Lamin, 22, Serrekunda

As a teacher, I've seen the difference RBYS school programs make. Children who were withdrawn are now participating. They're learning that their feelings matter." — Mr. Jallow, School Principal
